Fly Away Home
This film is a delight to watch. It is a story - based on fact - of the rearing of a flock of Canada geese, orphaned by land development around their nesting home.
The newly hatched goslings adopt Amy (played wonderfully by Anna Paquin) as their Mother Goose. Her father, an engineer, played masterly by Jeff Daniels, works with Amy - after initially trying to persuade her to give up the project - and teaches Amy how to fly a micro-lite aircraft.
This becomes crucial to the plot as the goslings need to learn how to fly and where to fly to; and in the absence of a Mother Goose Amy fits the bill. As the story unfolds we get a glimpse of human failure and officialdom, the inability of human reasoning at times to see a much broader picture of life. Amy shows us through her tenacity and love of nature what can be acheived when we strive for the very best, and don't give up our dreams.
Wonderfully shot and edited we are feasted to marvellous views of the land from the air; as it were a 'birds eye view', as the geese finally set off with Amy in the lead on their migratory journey to their breeding ground.
It is a story with a happy ending, for not only do we see the geese arrive at their resting place, indeed we arrive with them, but we are also informed that they returned the following year, back to Amy's home.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film because it was not only entertaining, but also informative. I looked at nature from a different view-point. I found nothing to dis-like about the film and bought it on eBay because having seen the film on TV I wanted to own a copy. It is one of the films you can watch time and again, and still enjoy it.
