Teach Yourself Korean
This is an excellent book in teaching you how to read the Hangul letters. It explains everything in detail. Each lesson has 2 conversations and after each one there would be detailed explanations not only about the grammar but the culture as well. I find this very helpful. There are exercises, that will help with improving in Korean. The book seems to include an Audio CD, that might help with pronunciation, so if you can get your hands on the CD that is excellent. The only thing I would have a problem with, is there aren't enough lessons. Certainly a book can only contain so many, but if you would want to advance further, you might consider buying more books or finding other ways to advance.

Teach Yourself Japanese
I've been wanting to study Japanese. So I browsed around for books that are teach yourself. I have used a teach yourself for Korean book. And I thought the method they used was fairly good in teaching the new language. So I thought it would be the same for Japanese. I am a bit disappointed that this book doesn't teach you how to read katakana and hiragana. It mostly uses the romanized version. Also it doesn't seem to contain as many lessons as I would like. It has exercises, and detailed explanations of grammar in each lesson. So certainly this is a good book to build your basics, but if you want to go advanced, other books might come in handy.
