Expensive and heavy, but worth it if you have the stength
Sharp, durable, fast, and reliable. If you can handle it’s weight and massive price tag then it’s well worth it. You need to really understand how big the lens actually is though. I do not think you should consider this unless you are very experienced as a photographer and are making money doing it. Depth of field is very shallow at f2.8 but it is very sharp of a lens. Is it good value, it depends, if you are a professional wildlife or sports photographer yes. If you do any other type of photography you should not get this lens, consider a 150-600 or 100-400 zoom lens or a 300 f4 prime.

Good results with the right lenses
1 of 1 found this helpful I highly recommend this for those shooting with a 1dxmk2, 1dx, 5dmk3, 5dmk4, 5ds, or 5dsr if you are a wildlife shooter. I wouldn’t recommend it on a crop sensor camera because the image quality loss will be more prevalent. I use this often on a 5dsr with a 400 f5.6 and the 180 f3.5 macro and with those lenses the quality is still amazing even with the teleconverter. On lesser lenses however the image quality is not quite as good and I wouldn’t recommend it. I would only recommend using a teleconverter for wildlife and macro with the 180mm macro. The additional reach is precious when you need to put as many pixels on your subject as possible

Amazing lens but only for experienced users
This lens is insanely sharp and the build quality is second to none, but it is very difficult to use. The sharpness of the lens is better then pretty much everything else I’ve used, and it takes teleconverters with minimal impact to its image quality. It is much sharper then the 100 2.8L is but due to the heavy weight and no image stabilizer in combination with its long focal length makes handheld macro very hard. Also traditional diffusion technique for macro photography does not work because the working distance is so much longer. I’ve had good luck using bounce cards to get light onto the subject. I shoot with a 5dsr with a battery grip, and with this lens and a flash it’s a handful at times and i would recommend a tripod. I’ve found this lens to be my first choice for still life on small subjects because I have more space to put various lighting vs my 100mm
