Cheap and robust but may fault to communicate with camera
If we compare canon native flash then option “flash exp. compensation” and “E-TTL II” will be active before the shutter was half pass. In the case of Nissin Di466 even the shutter was half pass camera flash menu may be inactive. So I half-press shutter button before enter menu “Flash control- External flash function setting”. After that “flash exp. compensation” and “E-TTL II (you can choose between [Evaluative] and [Average]) ” sometimes occur active. But in the same situation (i.e. shutter was half pass) “flash exp. compensation” and “E-TTL II” may occur inactive or not displayed at all (in this case you can hear sound of motors in flash as the camera zoomed). So there is instability in communication between Canon 500D (firmware version is 1.1.1) and Nissin Di466. I tested it with my Nissin Di466 and with Nissin Di466 given to me by the firm Avras (Russian distributor) at Photoforum 2013. I found similar reviews from other users: “I used Di466 with the 500D. There's a quirk in the behavior. Try half-press the shutter button and you will hear some noise, and only then you can go into custom function. Tested the camera with 270EX and that's no need to do such "initiation" for the devices to communicate”. http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/canon/717771-nissin-di466-not-compatible-eos-550d.html Three years have passed, and this problem has not been resolved. The worst thing is that even half-press of the shutter button not always allows access to “flash exp. compensation” and “E-TTL II [Evaluative]/[Average]”. In the direct flash comparison, the default setting for the nissin flash seems to be underexposed (Therefore, always check the photo and make necessary adjustment but I doubt anyone would use direct flash most of the time. Or I can set the firmware to default +0.5 to save some time). The +0.5 and +1.0 flash compensation result looks the same (Not sure whether this is a defect, but I think I lost a 0.5 stop option for the flash). Furthermore, I found Nissin produced slight warmer and much better lighting. The built-in flash's result looks balanced but I prefer result from Nissin flash.
