Fine opera and performance.

I have relatively recently become entranced by Russian opera, and Tchaikovsky in particular. In Mazeppa, I enjoy recognizing 'themes' from his orchestral works and hearing themes from Russian folk music. The folk element seems to me strongest in the choruses - and to my taste, Russian companies are superb at choruses. And it is nice to hear the Russian language. Of course the Kirov always provides a high standard for interpretation and performance. Some have spoken to the technical issues of the 1998 recording, but I happily listen to much earlier 20th C recordings and on not the best equipment; to me being at a live performance also does not have perfectly pure audio. The music comes through beautifully. I am glad to have purchased this and am very much enjoying it.
