Brilliant title with so many meanings .
I have wanted to read this book for over 40 years ! It is an excellent novel telling of the Jewish and Christian communities in the middle ages. It gives a good feeing of the mores of the communities and the political intrigues of the time. This early pogrom of York remains a scar in English history and another link in the chain of Jewish maryrdom.
Joanne Greenberg is a superb writer and her books are so varied in subject matter and theme. She is able to develop her plot in a clever and sensitive way and she shows a keen knowledge of history and the issues at hand. This is an early work of hers. Her later short stories and other novels show a gifted writer who is able to develop a variety of themes in an intriguing and fascinating way.
The book is both illuminating and enjoyable and I was not disappointed after reading a book I was told aboput over 40 years ago.
Read it and you will have a good read.
