A legendary tone with tons of mojo, personality AND versatility.
1 of 1 found this helpful I am happy to have found a 1978 Gibson The Ripper bass on eBay for a nice price (a bargain, by the way). Used apparently with loving care all these years, I'm said to be her 3rd owner.
After a few weeks jamming with rock and blues bands, I found much more versatility than I expected with the two humbuckers and the 2-tone passive electronics configuration. It's very easy to set that muddy bass tone from the Gibson character, running from warmer to agressive flavors a few buttons away.
I'm a passive bass guy, big fan of vintage electronics like Rickenbacker's and Peavey's T-40, and I find this circuit as amazing as both. The middle tone boost control is just amazing, analogically hardening and softening the sound.
Besides the sound, The Ripper's contruction completes the legend's dress. Maple big body and neck, the traditional 3-point bridge, rounded neck (but not thick as I expected to find in a 1978 Gibson) with a nice gripping.
Mine came without the chrome bridge cover, but I added a aftermarket cover because I enjoy not just the look, but the feeling of playing it with a pick.
