A Classic masterpiece
4 of 4 found this helpful This truly is a classic feel good movie relating to a paradise world called Shangri-La. Initially released in 1937 much of the original material was`lost because of deteriorating film. Robert Gilt, a film preservationist, has spent 25 years seeking footage from all around the world to restore missing scenes. Where there still remain some missing parts still photographs from the film are used together with the original sound score.
Starring Ronald Coleman and Jane Wyatt, produced and directed by Frank Capra this movie "made" Columbia Pictures reputation as a major film company. Despite being in B&W and of great age, the film is as impactful and rewarding as when it was first released. Shangri-La is an oasis of calm in a wore torn world where the ageing process is defied and no illness exists. And yet, amazingly some of those who live in this paradise believe the outside world is preferable. This results in death for some and great disappointment for others - in particular for Ronald Colman, who then spends all his time trying to find his way back to the secret mountain pass and entrance to what he now`recognises as paradise on earth and to the love of his life.
An alternative ending is also provided which I leave to the viewer as to which is best. Heartwarming;engaging;exploring desire/duty and relationships the scenery and landscapes are, for the time of production, magnificent.
I nearly awarded the film a score of 4 because of the missing scenes. However, on reflection I consider the film such a classic and, that it exists at all, deserves a 5. Enjoy!
