Ever bought an album on the strength of a the cover alone? Bet you have, bet you've been stung a few times too! Midnight Mushrumps by Gryphon has that sumptuous 70's progtastic artwork and who can resist an album described as progressive folk, well not me thats for sure. Sadly you can see why they got the support slot with the progressively anal Yes as its tiddly I, medieval folk and not a motoric beat in sight. This CD features the first 2 Gryphon albums (Mushrumps being the difficult 2nd)and I actually prefer the debut. The playing is superb and the production excellent, the songs simple and effective, tremendous music for using with any visuals medieval. But by Mushrumps the band sounds strung out and dissappearing up the same cul de sac as messeurs Anderson, Howe, wakeman et al. Maybe I'll give it a listen stoned of my noodle. Some of the band turned into The Banned who had a hit with 'Little Girl' in the late punk 70's, great tune, worth a few bob too with picture sleeve... not a lotta people know that. Ant July 2008
