Great book on the basics of bicycle touring!!
Since the book was written in 1977, based on the author's own cross country experience riding the Bike-centennial route in 1976, some of the information is dated. But that's ok. Even better. Because it strips away any biases of which modern equipment to use, etc. The information on planning, nutrition, bike basics, bike repair and upkeep, and the adventure of travelling by bicycle is all the same today as it was then. Even more so, as modern cycling has become so regulated and compartmentalized that a lot of the adventure of just going out and travelling is missed out on or overlooked. I am a veteran cyclist. A very traditional cyclist. I ride vintage Italian bikes. So all the technology in this book is the same for me. Newer bikes do have different components and frames, but the basics are the same. Packing and what to plan on carrying are the same. Roads are different, but this book is general enough that it covers just about every different type of road, condition, and normal cycling circumstance you would encounter today. I noticed she never mentions anything about dogs chasing bikes, throughout her entire travel across 4200 miles of the U.S. from Oregon to Virginia, sea to sea. Anyway, the book is great. Since it was written in a simpler time for bicycles, it draws you into the spirit and adventure of bicycling. That's what I liked about it. And because I read it, I now have learned more about the 1976 Bike-centennial event, and that a 40th anniversary Adventure Cycling summer-long series of bicycle touring events is scheduled along the TransAm bike route through the US next year in the summer of 2016. And that makes this an even more interesting and informative book to read for anyone interested in checking out any of those events and rides coming up next summer. Great Book!
