  Packaging is always done to ensure safe passage BUT staying within 500g or the postage price goes way up. If you wanted multiple layers of cardboard, I could've done that (I have a garage with stacks of cardboard) but you'd need to let me know that you were willing to pay much more postage. The packaging I used for your LP was the same packaging (re-used) that I just received an LP in, which was perfectly adequate for about 3 weeks in overseas transit, & so apparently...it was OK.
