The best inexpensive DSLR, bar none
6 of 6 found this helpful You can read all you want about how great this camera is elsewhere, so I won't bother recapping all its goodness. What I will tell you is that I just spent three weeks evaluating the Pentax K-x, which is the only DSLR I've found that is smaller than the D40. In theory the Pentax, being a 3+ year newer design and more expensive, should have blown away the lowly D40.
Nope. The Pentax is faster and loaded with goodies not on the D40, but if what you care about is ease of use and getting the best quality images you can, it doesn't even come close. I sent it back and bought a second D40 here on eBay.
The D40 is a special camera, one of the greatest ever made by Nikon (and I've owned the entire F series plus a D3). If you're far enough along to know that megapixels don't matter and you don't think Live View or movie modes have any business being in a real photographer's camera, the D40 may be all you ever need, period.
