Best comprehensive French dictionary
The word is comprehensive - NOT concise, as the title would lead you to believe. And hefty. Over 1000 pages of clear text on very white, high quality paper. This what we used to call in the old days a "desk" dictionary.
This is the big brother to the Webster's New Pocket French Dictionary. I use the pocket version most of the time and then use the "concise" version when I can't find the word or want more help.
What they both have in common is that they use American English - NOT British English like most French dictionaries. Both dictionaries have excellent "glosses", the words in parentheses in front of each definition. The glosses are in English on the English-French side and in French on the French-English side. I would prefer that all glosses were in English, but I have gotten used to them. This is better than a string of English definitions with no glosses to guide you on the proper usage of a word.
I highly recommend this dictionary and the pocket version.

"Small French Dictionary with American English"
Other than Merriam-Webster's French Dictionary (about 20,000 French headwords) this is the only other French dictionary that I know of that has definitions in American English. This dictionary is small in size and vocabulary (less than 10,0000 French headwords) but is very good. The big brother to this dictionary is not the larger one with the same cover design called "Webster's French Dictionary" but another Webster dictionary called "Webster's New World Concise French Dictionary." Don't let the word "concise" mislead you. The bigger dictionary which also uses American English is over 1000 pages!
