The Merchant of Venice a Movie Edition
Reducing one of Shakespeare’s Plays to a Movie length performance can only in part detract from the sheer brilliance of the Poetry Shakespeare used to portray all the characters in this Play.
That is not to say that the performance was poor.
The excellent portrayal of Venetian Life, the undercurrent of bigotry and hatred between Religions in the 16th Century, is well highlighted and serves well, to get us today, to question our own bigotry, our sympathies, and perhaps wonder where our own balance lies between our cries for Justice on one hand and our need to temper those cries by extending some form of real Justice on the other.
The brilliance of Shakespeare still shines in todays performance of a 400 year old play; the actors need only speak the lines and we are transformed into both the past and the present at the same time.
The performances are real, the emotional responses real, therefore a worthwhile addition to my collection.
