After having tried digital recording unsuccessfully with another unit I decided that a unit of this type was a must have and having purchased a plasma and surround sound system both made by Pioneer the addition of their HDD/DVD unit was a natural choice. Its setup was easy and its operation even easier with timer programming via the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) Two EPG's are available dependent upon whether you are watching analogue or digital transmissions. Once programmed options are easily changed to allow for quality, timing, frequency and format (HDD or DVD). Transfer of recordings from HDD to DVD is possible at high speed with a 2 hour recording taking approximately 6 - 8 minutes to burn to DVD. Editing prior to burning is easy and allows the item to be burnt to be compacted. It will handle all types +R, -R and RW's as well as dual layer discs. Pause live TV or Chase Play are possible with the unit. Menus are relatively easy to understand even for my wife and I and my wife finds it simplicity itself to use. To select recordings for playback the Disc Navigator menu is used. This pops up all relevant information about the recordings along with a preview box to show sections of the recordings. A simple "Enter" selects the item for playback and off you go. All default settings mean easy use, and after further reading and understanding of the large and slightly complicated instruction book, changes to many settings regarding quality and type of recordings can be made. My only criticism is that when "burning" DVD's from the hard drive there is only a small icon in the window to show what is going on. I would have liked more on screen information. However once you've got used to it its OK. Unit can be used as a musical jukebox or a picture slide show viewer. The hard drive capacity (160Gb)is around 68 hours at standard play quality, decided on this size and glad I did as it is very easy to collect hours of programming. Clearouts are needed regularly and occassionally a reformatting of the drive is necessary. DVD is good quality and optical audio out can be taken to a 5.1 decoder for home cinema style surround sound audio. This unit does not have the HDMI connector which some models have. However quality out in SP mode (standard play - not the highest quality)) via scart or component connection is so good I am not too concerned. I bought this unit for £231 and consider it one of my best buys I hope it encourages you do buy a similar model.
