"Classic" Mario Kart
The first of the Mario Kart series to introduce the 'power slide' maneuver, this 1997 (1996 in Japan) successor to the widely-popular Super Nintendo original has been considered among the best, if not the best, game of the franchise. One of many incredibly-successful Mario games for the N64 (others include Mario Tennis, Mario 64, Mario Party(ies), Mario Golf, Dr Mario 64, Paper Mario, and a cameo in Super Smash Brothers) that, like its cousins, featured excellent multi-player action. Mario Kart 64 has excellent combat and racing modes, and is the first of the saga to allow you to race against your 'ghost' in Time Trial mode. The only qualms I have with this game are that you cannot save your ghost data (or any other 'record' data) without having a little N64 memory device plugged into your controller. This isn't really a problem with the game itself, just how most N64's save their data (sucks). Playability wise, this game gives hours upon hours of entertainment, and revolutionizes a lot of the original steering/sliding/combat techniques used in all later versions. -AB

Great Shooter!! Instant Fun!
Great Game!! A handheld port of the original Super Nintendo game Contra 3: The Alien Wars. (The top-down levels are replaced with the train level from Contra: Hard Corps). I found this game to be very entertaining. After playing through the first few levels a few times you'll be able to reach level 4 or 5 with ease - and every single time they are exciting. Amazing music and sound effects also boost the re-playability of this great title. There is a password-based load game system, however in this day and age I've often found myself wondering 'what kind of notes am I supposed to write..' on my DS apps, iPOD aps, etc.. and this became an instant use. With a DS or GBA in your pocket having this game in it - you will never get bored.

Finally Tetris has a competitor for best handheld
Imagine concepts behind Tetris, Columns, Bejeweled, and a slurry of other 3-color matching game with increasing odds all rolled into one with a perfect use of the DS stylus. Don't let screenshots of this game fool you, matching colors and launching blocks is very rewarding as you'll find yourself making split-second decisions while nearly being overwelmed by the tickling sounds of combos and bonuses, all while the music changes and reacts to your every move. This game is the perfect pick-up-and-play game, and every point you earn gets added to long-term bonuses that you can browse through, purchase with game-awarded points, and combine on your own.
