Quin's Shanghai Circus by Edward Whittemore (1974)
This was Whittemore's first book, and the prelude to the Jerusalem Quartet, the opus of his life's literary work. Having already read Sinai Tapestry and Jerusalem Poker before I read this volume, his seductive method of characterization is immediately obvious. Once he arrived in Jerusalem it was a no brainer, his astute talent naturally morphed into the quartet, the most outstanding portrayal of earthly Jerusalem ever committed to paper.
