Same old formula
The main appeal for me is creating a character and playing Dynasty Warriors with them. If they included that in the main series I probably wouldn't touch the Empires games. The strategy component is not very deep and there are some very odd things that happen throughout it (start the game, get married, have a kid within a few months, a year or so later they are an adult and join your kingdom?)
Having said that - if strategy is what you want, stick with Romance of the Three Kingdoms games instead. If you want a simplistic Dynasty Warriors where you can make your own character and pretend to make meaningful decisions while not smashing thousands of skulls, this is the one for you.
