ASUS Trio i7 TX201LA 11.6" FHD 1TB + 16G-SSD WIN8-PRO & Andriod UltraBook Tablet

Powerful windows laptop, with long life android tablet
I have owned an Asus TX201LA for 2 years and its an amazing little machine. I travel internationally for a living into rough places as an international aid worker and I treat my gear rough, and its survived, need I say more. When I bought mine its greatest limitation was mine came with 4gig of ram and the ram is soldered in so cant be upgraded. I succeeded getting around this by upgrading to a Samsung 1Tb SSD and alocating large blocks of virtual memory. Asus weirdly told me this was not possible, which it so obviously was. Asus apparently got in trouble with both Windows and Android over this computer as they sold it with OEM Software for both operating systems. The OEM agreement provides manufactureres with greatly cheaper versions of software to suck consumers into the software providers ecoverse, the agreement generally includes an exclusivity clause that means that manufacturers cant sell dual operating system machines. Asus argued that the tablet (sreen) and laptop (keyboard) were seperate machines and hence there was no breach of agreement. Unfortunately this very inovative machine was released just as android started fighting for space in the laptop market with chromebooks and as Microsoft started competing in the phone market, hene both were up in arms. The result was the machine was only sold for a limited period in mainstream markets, lingering on in other markets, quite probably as they sold off existing stock. At time of writing the 4g version can still be bought in Indonesia. This conflict also meant the machine was undersupported by both Microsoft, Android and Asus. This caused driver diffiulties upgrading to Windows 10, and odd conficts switching between system. The increasing variety of machines in this pull apart, flip space has changed this and the latest version of Windows now runs well, previous strange driver hacks are no longer required. As for the machine itself. The laptop is well built in sleek solid brushed steel casing. The laptop has an acceptable 2-3 hr battery life when running on an SSD and the Tablet has a slightly longer life. One of the real beauties of this machine is that the tablet and windows modes can both run whether or not the two components of screen and key board are joined. What this means for the user is that you can -plug the two components together with either one or both operating systems running. When only running Android the tablet an use the atttached keyboard for easy data entry, and the keyboard sections battery for up to 17hrs battery life. When running both systems, there is a button on the upper function key row that allows you to switch between the operating systems. Shared drives can be createds, or windows can see the tablet plugged in as it would see a phone plugged in. When seperated the keyboard section can be connected to an external monitor and act as a stand alone machine while the screen runs as a seperate tablet. Sadly once seperated there is no way for one component to use the other. It would be ideal at times if once seperated the keyboard setion running windows could use the screen section as a bluetooth or wireless monitor, or if the screen section in tablet mode could remotely use the keyboard, sadly not. A missed opportunity on an otherwise amazingly flexible machine. The only issue worth considering with this machine is the weight. As both sections can run fully indepedentatly, both must have batteries, wifi, processors, bluetooth, USB, etc. Though quite light when seperated, this results in a considerable increase in weight when joined together. I'd say this machine would really suit anyone who is used to carrying around both a tablet and a laptop, or for anyone lookimg for all the relative advantages of both in one small machine. personally I love it !
