Character set is too small and CD is a joke.
Cons.
The character set is way too small. The kanji characters are barely decipherable. Sure, I'm over 40, but I can read other Japanese books just fine. A second issue is that the CD does not cover much. It gives the audio version of 1 of the 5 sections in each chapter, covering just a few short sentences. Other sections are not included: no audio for the vocabulary list, etc. It is possible to buy the supplementary 5 CD pack directly from Japan to cover the other sections for a whooping $80. Another hurdle is that the kanji characters are introduced out of order. For instance, the 1st chapter introduces kanji of level JPLT N3, one of them was even at JPLT N1 (junior high).
Pros.
Otherwise I like that the book is fully immersive without any romanji. I bought this book along with the supporting English translation of the grammar which is much needed. It is a good value for the money, despite its many shortcomings.

Better than all-in-one.
I found the Faber series well suited to start learning from scratch. The "older beginner" is much better than the all-in-one. Don't let the intended audience, teenagers, put you down if you are an adult. You get more content for the price. The Level 1 Performance provide the opportunity to repeat the lessons with fresh material. The pieces are entertaining.

An instrument that invites to be played.
1 of 1 found this helpful Great tone. The reeds are sounding more like an harmonica than an accordion. I like it better this way and choose this particular model M-32C specifically for the tone. The built quality is awesome: the instrument gives a very solid feel when holding it. I am a beginner on the melodica, coming from the piano, and find it easy to play. The touch response is fast. The keys are soft and silent all the way to the key bed, without any thumb or click. It does not take much air to play, and this is also another reason I got the 32 key model rather than a larger instrument. The response is fast, without any delay pressing a key and hearing the note, even in the lower register. Volume control is easy, even for a beginner like me. I was concerned with the color of the instrument, blue! I got used to it rather fast. An instrument that invites to be played.
