Great camera and built to last-some great buys now on eBay
This is an outstanding camera for use with DX Nikon lenses that was originally designed for advanced amateurs and pro photographers. There are a lot of potential adjustments using dials, buttons, and the menus so be wary if do not want to deal with them. Some people may not like the 12MP sensor, but almost no one needs any larger sensor unless you need to make massive blow-ups or need to do extensive cropping of your image (I made a five foot by 1.5 foot panoramic by overlapping 5 pictures from a 6MP camera that looks great). Also realize that this camera does not have video. You have to get the upgrade to the Nikon d300s camera to get video. There are a lot of these d300 bodies with fairly low shutter counts on eBay now that are selling in the $500 to $600 price range as a lot of people are upgrading to full frame cameras. I bought one for $545, and I have no regrets. The camera seems made to last with the magnesium alloy body and expected shutter activations of 150,000. My plastic body Nikon cameras seem almost like toys compared to the d300.

Excellent pictures, fast autofocus, rapid pictures, no eyepiece viewfinder
The Nikon 1 J1 camera has excellent picture quality (including raw files), is extremely fast focusing and has fast shooting rates (up to 60 frames per second). I bought it so that I have a small camera that is easy to carry around if I do not want to drag along my bigger single lens reflex camera. The biggest negative for me is the lack of an eyepiece view finder (the more expensive v1 version has this). This means that you have to hold the camera out away from your eye so that the camera tends to move as you take the picture. The camera in autoexposure mode tends to pick a slow shutter speed so that pictures may be blurred unless a tripod is used. I avoid this by using the aperture priority mode so that I can change the aperture (lens opening) to make sure that the shutter speed is fast enough to avoid blurred images. Also the camera has an image stabilization mode so that blurry pictures are less likely at slower shutter speeds. Also the 10-30 mm lens focuses down to about 8 inches so close to macro images may be obtained. Some people may not like that the depth of field is large so it may be difficult to keep the background out of focus if, for instance, the foreground is in focus. There are a lot of other small, mirrorless cameras now that the experts have tended to give better reviews than the Nikon 1 J1, but you should be able to get a lot of excellent pictures from this camera if you are careful about the exposure speeds. I will not comment about the video since I do not often use it.

Great lens, a bargain at $160 (list price is $250)
I bought this as the telephoto for the Nikon 1 camera since I also have the standard 10 to 30mm lens. This lens is fast focusing on this camera and gives excellent pictures at the 35mm equivalent of about 80mm to nearly 300mm. It has a maximum aperture of F/3.8 and focuses down to about a meter. I bought it for $160 on the "Buy It Now" option so this was a good price. I only wish that the color of the lens was the same as the color of the camera body, but that color does not appear to be available as a separate lens.
