Steely Dan Steps Up for Two Against Nature DVD
First off, I'm a big Steely Dan fan. This was my first musical DVD of anybody. Although this recording was done eight years ago, I saw/heard it for the first time a few weeks ago. I've listened to it three more times since. The live songs are, in most cases, better than the originals. The additional brass, guitar leads and backup singers enhanced the classics -- Green Earrings, Josie, FM, Babylon Sisters, Kid Charlemagne and Peg. Jack of Speed, in my opinion, is without equal in regards to the new music they've created since getting back together in the early '90s. Primary drawback was the impromptu portions between the songs. Becker was carrying it off okay, but Fagen was mostly annoying. But what an amazing sound!

As Good as it Gets
Album V in the Steely Dan vault. As good as Steely Dan had been before Royal Scam (1976), the band's results improved. The high standard Fagan & Becker et al have set remains -- unexpectedly -- unmatched. Their sound and story-telling become pieces of art in musical notes. The only album as good as Royal Scam was Steely Dan's next one, Aja (1977).
