Great book on under reported WWII campaigns
I had never really thought about the Allied campaign in North Africa in World War II. This book is an excellent tool to explain the importance of the victory in North Africa and the sacrifice, and frustrations the Allies had to deal with to finally remove the Nazis and Italians out of that continent. Atkinson won the Pulitzer Prize for this book and when you read it you will understand why. He is a story teller extraordinaire. Part poet, part journalist, part analyst, part historian, it all adds up to a very readable chapter of WWII history. It is remarkable how the reader can follow along with the characters on both sides. Atkinson uses excerpts from letters, diaries and veteran interviews to keep the story on a very human scale. The research and retelling of this battle is superb and I must mention the excellent battle maps. Like the title implies, America's army was 'birthed' in Africa, they experienced a fierce baptism of a bliinding dawn and survived to see the day break.
