Mysteries of the Rectangle by Siri Hustvedt
This book started out with a bang. I loved what Hustvedt had to say about our personal responses to art. It reminded me of an overwhelming physical response I had to van Gough's work in Amsterdam. An artist myself, I was looking for a book that specifically addressed the dynamic WE bring to the thing that we are looking at - that experience that arises that is based in our own personal history of what it means to be 'self.' She takes this topic on directly in her introduction so I thought that the text would carry through with this theme but it did not - except covertly. However, I also realize that not everyone would be intersted in that particular approach. If you are not, it is an excellent book with deep and insightful observations of various works and of the artists themselves. Hustvedt has a brilliant sensitivity that shines through, no matter what the topic. I especially enjoyed her fearless wonder and poetic insight. A book well worth reading if you are an art lover.
