    Harold Brushes his teeth...
This is a great movie. A bit leftfield and off the wall plotwise. Like David lynch had a brainstorming session with the Coen brothers. But it is very worthy. Essentially a man finds out he is actually somehow a fictional character in a book that Emma Thompson's author character is writing and that she is somehow narrating his 'real' life. He also discovers that, through her narrative, his demise is imminent. He quickly sets about finding out exactly what the heck is going on before it's too late. Confusing? Strange? Yes. But just watch and enjoy. All the actors put in sterling performances (which is no real suprise with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, but Ferrell suprises in his confident low key strong performance - he doesnt go for his usual gurning face-pulling over-the-top schtik. He lets the comedy come from the plot and the script. His characters initial discovery and interaction with Thompsons narrative voice are brilliant). If you liked the Truman Show or Donnie Darko then this is definately one for you.

    Over The Top
This review was only going to be one star, but I awarded more just for the example of an extra totally overacting at the end. Worth seeing for him alone. Watch out for the tech guy in glasses that features in numerous scenes towards the very end of the film. He looks pained, shocked, relived and even holds his hands over his ears in distress at one point. Brilliant.Give the guy a film of his own. Other than that 2010 has really good effects but, unfortunately, is a totally bland and pointless watch. And when exactly did Danny Glover turn into an Elmer Fudd soundalike?

As Wichita Falls so falls Wichita
For every Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty or Lock Stock, there are a dozen Ice Harvests. It's got the big name actors in John Cuzak and Billy Bob Thornton, it's got the comedy dialogue, it's got the cool cameos (Randy Quaid), it's got the twisting film noir plot; essentially the film follows Cuzaks character around a seedy world of crummy lap dancing clubs and brothels where he works as a lawyer for the mob. The story begins as Cuzuk skims some mob money with the aid of Billy Bob and they plan their off for the morning. They just have to play it cool and normal for one remaining evening so that the theft remains undiscovered. A femme fatal, an ex wife and a mob hit man, amoungst others, soon all put paid to that plan. But it just doesnt gel. The characters are just not believable, the setting is just not that interesting, the funny one liners just arent that funny, The film is simply just not as cool and clever as it thinks it is. Not bad. Certainly watchable and it is mildly entertaining in places. But there is nothing original or groundbreaking here. Cuzak plays his part amicably enough but Billy Bob makes no impression at all. Either way you are actually glad when it's all over as things really do begin to drag by the end. To summise. In my opinion this is nothing more than a 'watch if theres nothing else out there' movie and definately no classic. Distinctly average.
