WINDOWS VISTA OS GOOD WINDOWS 7 OS POOR

DELL STUDIO XPS 1640 SERIES NOTEBOOK IS CERTAINLY A NICE LOOKING UNIT AND WHEN CONFIGURED PROPERLY RUNS QUITE WELL . PROBLEM IS WHEN CONVERTING TO WIDOWS 7 MAJOR PROBLEMS SURFACE .THE MOST PREVALENT BEING THE OPTICAL DRIVE.REMEMBER THIS IS A NOTEBOOK BUILT TO RUN WIDOWS VISTA AND NUMEROUS PEOPLE DON,T LIKE VISTA (ALSO VISTA SVC PK 1 IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT) BUT ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU WILL FIND IS WHEN PLAYING DVD OR BLU-RAY DISC STREAMING WILL NOT BE SMOOTH JERKING, HANGING ERRATIC OPERATION IS COMMON BUT IF YOU FIND THIS UNIT TO BE TOO CUTE TO PASS UP I SUGGEST YOU RUN A DUAL BOOT SYSTEM WITH W7 AND VISTA SO YOU CAN GET PAST SOME OF THE ISSUES.I WOULD RATE THIS AS A 2 FOR W7 AND A 4 FOR VISTA OS.AND BY ALL MEANS IF YOU RUN W7 ON THIS UNIT GET A SYS AND REG REPAIR UTILITY IT WILL KEEP YOU FROM THROWING IT AGAINST THE WALL.

Light weight with HDMI and USB 3 I/O

Most functions work well. One of the lightest rugged convertibles i have ever seen. Twin batteries gives it ability to use (on long flight) for extended time. Batteries also have gas gauge type button w/ 5 leds to show relative available charge. One problem i had was touch pad and and touch pad buttons interfere with each other,and movement of arrow icon. I just could not work with this issue i was required to disable the touch pad tap function. Also one would think for this type of computer a lighted keyboard would not have to be an additional option. Another issue i found it a problem just which model i was looking at as with most of the Getac computers go through an updating process G1,G2,G3,G4 etc. These Generation changes may have critical changes that are not interchangeable between updates. I think there should be some clue as to what unit you are dealing with ( possibly a designation such as G1 or G2 etc shown in the bios ). Another issue was i required an external speaker or head phones to hear audio in streaming on line audio.
