" Like a moth to a flame he is drawn to beautiful things!" Said of John Verge Interior Designer. As an avid collectophile and Maxamilist interior designer iam a collector ( or hoarder depends who you ask lol) of many different genres , French, Oriental, Vintage , Art deco, Brutalist, Art Nouveau, English Regency Victorian, Mid century modern, Edwardian, Georgian and more, No design epoch is safe for a pillage and reinvention, I believe that antiques and objet d'art should be used if that was the designers intent and they will be loved in turn, not to be inanimate objects that are sat only to be looked at! (There are exceptions of course) , Qualified in many areas of the Interior design, and Jewellery industries, along with being a competent gemologist , One may just never know what I could list next through my ever revolving design styles and the echelons involved herein. ANTIQUITIES/ARTIFACTS & FOSSILS - Are Items over 300 years of age and they generally fall into one of two categories depending upon whether they are manmade creations or natural finds. If they are not manmade, and they are the remains or impressions of formerly living things, they are classified as fossils.
If the item is manmade, they are called antiquities or artifacts (also spelled artefacts).
Typically these could be unearthed during an archaeological dig or re discovered in a basement or attic
Typically, items over 300 years that are dug up either in the process of modern land development and construction, or by archaeological work are classified as prehistoric
ANTIQUES - Antiques are items which must be at least 100 years old. That means, from this year being 2024, an antique needs to be made before 1924 to be classified a true Antique.
The 100-years-or-older rule applies to any item irrespective of materials.
VINTAGE - Vintage is a term that describes an item created from the 1920s to the 1980s that has distinct features of the period in which it was created. Vintage items have historical value and are considered quality because they were designed before mass and cheap production.
RETRO / REPO - Retro And Repo (Reproduction) items are new items created inspired by the fashion of previous decades and imitate vintage items. Often true vintage items are advertised as retro in relation to the period of time they were manufactured so buyers should carefully check if it is a reference to a specific period or if the item is a recent reproduction.
