Hottest Band in Town bop 1 and 2

Ms Durham has one of the clearest and emotionally compelling voices from an era with many outstanding female vocalists. This collection of material from her first love of jazz is very nicely balanced with traditional favorites and works by Ms. Durham herself. Her versatility and understanding of the material shine in this two disc collection. Unfortunately, the sonic quality of the discs do not do justice to her wonderful voice. While Vol 2 is an improvement over the earlier effort in sonic quality, both lack the dynamic range necessary to fully display her vice. Both sound quite compressed and bright to the point of being slightly harsh. To those like myself who listened to, and reveled in, Ms. Durham 's beautiful voice, this is disappointment. The songs themselves are great. Despite their limitations, these discs are well worth owning and provide a window into an often too frequently ignored genre of Ms. Durham's work.
