Excellent camera, poor reliability
16 of 18 found this helpful The good: This camera can take absolutely amazing pictures. I had one that I took printed at 13" X 19", and it still looks every bit as good as a film photograph. Nikon makes excellent lenses, and the ability to go from close up macro to an 8 power zoom without additional glass is a real plus. Also, the flash shoe lets you use a real flash. Good ergonomics - it fits both me and my wife's smaller hands well. Lots of user adjustability, but works well in automatic mode.
The stuff you have to put up with: This isn't a camera you can pull out of the box and start shooting with. Reading and understanding the instructions is NOT optional. If you are taking bad pictures with this camera, it is more than likely not set up correctly. Read the manual. Twice.
The bad: Reliability is not that good. I got one of these cameras about two years ago, along with several Nikon lenses, extra battery, external flash, etc. The whole kit was just under $2000. The CCD ( the electronic sensor that actually 'sees' the image ) malfunctioned juat after the waranty ran out. Yay. I had it fixed for about $225. I just had it burn out again this morning. I'm either going to have to get it fixed again, buy another one, or purchace a completely new setup. The only cameras that my expensive lenses fit are the 5700 and the 8700, both no longer made.
If you are thinking of getting one of these cameras, and you expect to upgrade to something newer later, it probably will work out fine for you. 95% of the pictures you will ever take will only need the built in lenses. I got mine expecting it to last for a long time, and I spent allot of money on high quality extras that ONLY FIT THIS CAMERA. Don't bother with the extras unless you can afford to replace everything when the camera breaks.
*THIS IS AN UPDATE TO THIS REVIEW*
I have learned since writing this review that Nikon is offering a FREE repair for these cameras. Apparently the CCD problem was common for this model. The link to the information on the Nikon website is a bit hard to find, but here is the link - http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html
My thanks to both 25533kielce and bekkerjune for taking the time to send me this information.

Good photo printing, with extra features.
8 of 8 found this helpful I got this printer about a month ago. I'm about half way through my second set of ink cartridges, and I've been happy with the quality of the prints. This is a good printer, and it has some nice features. It is a six color photo printer, so the prints are far more detailed than a cheap 4 color inkjet. It also uses seperate ink cartridges, so you can replace only the empty color and not waste ink. Inkjet photo paper gives a far better print than standard copy paper, but it is much more expensive.
Using the memory card slots and the small display lets you print without even turning on your computer. The computer can access a card in the printer, but for some reason if the card's contents are changed by the computer the printer won't realize it unless you remove the card and put it back in.
You can print on CDs and DVDs with the included tray, and there is also an insert for the tray to print on mini CDs and DVDs. The included software works, but it isn't that user friendly. It WILL keep you from overspraying outside of the disc's surface, but that's about the best thing about it.
Overall, this is a good printer, but there is nothing new or revolutionary about it. Nice features, good print quality and speed, and fairly quiet while printing.

EXCELLENT little player
1 of 1 found this helpful First, I'm not really sure why eBay separated these players by color. There is no difference between any of the colors. The same basic player is available with 512meg, 1gig or 2gig of memory, and will support the two most common types of file formats for playback - MP3 and WMA (also WMA with DRM). My 1gig holds about 250 songs. The nicest thing about this player is the fact that it needs NO software or drivers for Windows 2000/XP, and 98 users just need the drivers. When plugged in, the computer simply sees the player as another drive, not a device. You can use the player just like a thumb drive or floppy disc (remember those things?)
The player itself seems very rugged for it's small size - less than 1 inch cube! I've bumped mine around a bit and I haven't even managed to scratch the cool little screen yet. With a bit of care this thing should last for years.
There are certainly better earbuds and headphones available as far as sound quality, but the ones that come with this unit are fairly good. The headphones are also the antenna for the radio, and for whatever reason the included earbuds pull in stations much better than anything else I've tried. Also, they double as a neck strap so you can just wear the player on your chest.
The good: It is very small and well built. 10 hour life on the built in rechargeable battery. FM tuner that really works. MP3 & WMA support. It has a real equalizer to adjust the sound. It doubles as a thumb drive to transfer ANY type of files from computer to computer. Surprisingly bright and readable screen. Can record from the radio. Plus it is cheaper than an iPud.
The bad: It is small enough to loose easily, and children could choke on it. I'm not sure if the built in battery is replaceable, but you aren't going to do it yourself. iPud users will be jealous and hate you for having it.
