Buy it for the excellent picture quality.
This is a great lens. Picture quality is outstanding. Auto focus is lightning fast. I also have the Sigma 2X converter made for this lens. They perform very well together.
You could not ask for a tougher lens. Will stand up to hard use. Heavy to carry around - but most fast lenses are. Somehow I think it could be made a bit lighter.

Great travel zoom
This lens is not as heavy as most zooms that reach 400mm.
Auto focus is fast and image quality is excellent.

Good value long telephoto zoom lens
This Maxxum lens by Minolta is a good value. The lens is sturdy, sharp and solid but not too heavy. Of course, you must learn how to use a long lens properly to get the very best images from it. Very easy to hand hold if you use a fast enough shutter speed. You will be using ISO 800 or even ISO 1600 in some cases to obtain excellent photos.
With a tripod or monopod, you can use lower ISO settings. At the long end of the zoom, the lens is fairly slow. But a fast shutter speed will help you get great photos. The size of this lens is nice. It is built to last. The images have great color like most Minolta lenses.
