A True Masterpiece
A Season of Giants by Vincenzo Labella is a magnificent view of the three greatest artists of the Rennisance. Michalangelo, DiVinci and the young Raphael are taken off thier prospective pedistals and dealt with as contemporaries in a time when state and church were the two political powers that can make or break the artistic voice. Filled with colorful and detailed pictures this book deals with text much more in a documentary style than a text book. A chapter in particular that stands out is a discription of Michaelangelo's David. It is written in away that is almost seems as if the artist himself is trying to convince you to by his sculpture. There was a mini-series based on this book, which has not been made available on VHS or DVD. Both book and movie are highly recomended for anyone who loves the masters, and long to experience a time in history that was truly a season of giants.

IF YOU DON'T OWN A COPY OF BATMAN - BUY A COPY NOW
Truely there are only two reasons to buy a copy of Batman the Movie. FIRST of all, it is a Tim Burton film and any admirer of his work would be daft not to own this DVD. And don't forget it was one of his first directorial achievements that made him a Hollywood High Roller. Somone to take seriosly as a film maker and someone the studios can bank on. SECOND of all, this adaptation and vision of the Caped Crusader redefined the way movie makers portray super heros. Before this Batman, there was only Superman (with Christopher Reeves) to pave the way for men in tights with a desire to destroy all things evil. And Burton (a story teller of great proportions) gives the audience everything they want in a movie and more. He gave the back story of the hero with a bit of humor and a touch of jaded sinicisim and enough pathos for us to care about his fate. He also gives the audinece a full understanding of how deep the pain goes, and how all the riches in the world does not make it go away. A concept that every other director of the franchise continued to focus on. ANd then the brilliance of Casting Jack Nicholson as the Joker. It falls equal to having Marlon Brando sign on to do Apocolypse now. Risk after risk, Tim Burton carved and chiseled a classic and contemporary (almost timeless) look at what a comic book hero would be if brought to life. And Hollywood took notice. After Batman, a slue of vigilanties in costume sprang forth, including, The Hulk, Spawn, The Fantastic Four and most recently Ghost Rider. All these movies were defined by the level Tim Burton set for comic book hero genre. In fact, it was not only the super hero he set a standard for. If you watch Burton's Batman, you will find many other "illustrated novels turned into film" that hold up the simalr candle. The dark Matropolis of the Dark Man Series, the underlined brooding and pathos of The Crow, the intensity of events that spin out of control within The Road to Predistion... and the list goes on and on. If you love Tim Burton, if you love comic book heros... this movie is a classic in the regard that it paved the way. The only two reasons you need to own this movie.

Gypsy with Bette Mider and a Tell All Commentary
I was 8 years old when I was first introduced to the Musical Gypsy. It is the story of the climb to fame of legendary strip tease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. But it really depicts the life of her mother Rose Hovick. It has been produced on Broadway with some of the greatest female broadway stars in history playing Mama Rose. Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and recently Bernadette Peters. There was a film version in the 60's with Rosland Russle, Natelie Wood and Karl Malden. But this version with Bette Midler launched a series of broadway musicals for the small screen. It broke records when aired on TV in the late 1990's. I had been wanting this version for a few years when it was released on DVD for one simple reason. I had to hear the commentary on the making of this classic musical revivale to film. It was worth the wait and the bidding. The sorted details about how this project got off the ground, how the authors had doubts and reservations, how Bette Midler turned it down several times before accepting, and how the director was hospitalized for complications due to full blown AIDS before the project was finished. He passed way shortly after completion. It' is filled with some of the juciest tid-bits on this musical to date. If you are a musical buff and love the "behind the scenes' dirt, you have to to get a DVD copy of this classic.
