"LA LA LAND" PALES BY COMPARISON
If you liked/loved "La La Land," this 50 year old French antecedent eclipses Hollywood's attempt to capture it's magic. Celebrated French director Jacques Demy-directed keeps the action flowing seamlessly and there are multiple plots involved instead of a single story arc... and a happy ending all around... even the "serial killer" character. The sisters played by Catherine Deneuve and her late sister Francoise Dorleac (Sorry, I don't have the various characters for the French language) are both ravishingly beautiful and each a talented triple threat.
Singing voices are strong not reticent & thin... a grating situation throughout the recent "LLL" ...and it's greatest weakness.
(I wish that those two could have made "Chicago!") Plus... Gene Kelly. YES, ...Gene Kelly, who, in the late 1960s, was still in top form and athletically dancing his ass off.
The musical's score is by the legendary composer Michel Legrand. Some of his melodies were the basis of pop hits and
more memorable than anything in the recent La La Land (see title of this review!)
If you DON'T like this movie, something's wrong!! Give it a couple of runs to get used to its format. If you liked "Umbrellas of Cherbourg," also directed by Demy, you'll find this a frothy confection by comparison. They don't get much better than this... and they don't make 'em like they used to!! This ran on TCM recently and SHOULD be in regular rotation... hope Ben Mankiewitz gets to read this... OR SOMEone @ TCM!!

Perfect Light for Reading
Whereas most single light reading lamps are direct and leave marginal text a bit dark or fuzzy, this light illumines the entire page so that it has full and consistent lighting without marginal loss or use of the light disturbing another party who may be either asleep or headed in that direction.
