"Far more valuable than superficial society writing"
This is a most unusual piece of writing by a most unusual, clever, sensitive and highly observant musician and all-round highly intelligent human being. I now have both volumes of this carefully factual and also very funny autobiography and very much look forward to reading the grown-up continuation of the young man's retrospective awareness of his early life. His music is little known these days, and although he was in his day regarded as being a true eccentric and perhaps a bit of a social curiosity, he produced some skilful and extremely imaginative music which deserves a new life. Perhaps such a good and eye-catching edition of his writings as this one might bring him back into some literary prominence and interest.

A humorous and clever card
An excellent design and produced in good colours and paper quality. Quentin Blake's work is always a winner for any occasion card. The price was good too and it suited me very well all round.

another cunning stroll through Edinburgh's lives and thoughts
As a staunch support of Mr. McCall Smith, I always look forward to the latest peregrinations of his familiar yet always inviting characters. His style results in a uniquely gentle and curiously slow telling of wonderfully funny, annoying and loveable people who have unswerving faith in their own thoughts and decisions, however illogical some of their eventual actions may be. But Bertie has so much belief in his own young logicality that we need him to spread his almost amusingly academic common sense way beyond the pages of the book and into our own minds. I find that any of the books in this particular series acts as a very welcome calm in our own busy and often unsure lives. Alexander McCall Smith is the Dickens of his day - better than that, he omits the real grittiness of our lives and soldiers on regardless of real issues. We need him, his elegant humour and any project he cares to tell us about.
