Historical Mish-Mash
1 of 2 found this helpful Very confusing screenplay, historically inaccurate in some spots. With Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and others, the acting is good, but could be better. The editing is choppy, as well, and like most of the screenplay, is does not get across them point Caligula's madness.. It could do with a serious rewrite and a better director and screenwriter.
Lot of emphasis on orgy scenes, but, they are not very erotic, nor exciting. Helen Mirren was the sexiest of the women actors, but, the director could not resist the urge to be artsy , rather than straightforward, with her nude scenes, so, they are a disappointment, too.
Larry Flint is not a director and ruined what could have been a very interesting movie.

Better than expected
This movie is set in Shanghai in 1942, when the Japanese Army had invaded China and occupied the city. It is well-acted and written and seems historically accurate. The characters are well-drawn and the plot, which is to kill a Chinese national, who is an intelligence agent for the Japanese, is very suspenseful and realistic. Also, I was very surprised that there was more sexual activity than I expected in the movie between the agent and a young Chinese girl who was trying to set him up to be assassinated. In fact, the sex scenes are very different from what is usually seen in American sexual scenes. In America, the sex is constrained and inhibited. In this movie, the sexual scenes are very realistic, though not pornographic. They do not show penetration, but real sex, the kind that normal people engage in. Additionally, the film does not end in the way you might expect, and not for the reason you might suspect, but again, for a reason that is totally unexpected, but also possible.

Cute and sexy
Hasegawa is a small woman, who is cute and cuddly. The action starts slowly, then ramps up, but Hasegawa is always smiling. She is older in the movie than the still picture you see of her, but that is a publicity shot, taken when she was beginning her career. She is still very pretty and you wonder why she is not acting in regular movies for the general public. She could easily pass for an actual student still in high school. It is s pleasure to look at her.
