A story that echoes through eternity.
A tremendous cast!
Gielgud, Mason, Brando, O'Brien, Kerr, Calhern, Garson, and Australia's own Michael Pate.
Music composed by Miklos Rozsa..though only snippets are included in the movie...I recommend the purchase of the full soundtrack to appreciate the wondrous score.

My brother, my saviour.
Wonderful slow paced story about 2 brothers and their often difficult relationship.De Niro is a priest, Duvall is a detective.
Film is set in late 40's LA and is framed around the grizzly Black Dahlia unsolved murder.
However gruesome that part of the movie is , far more engaging is the story of sibling rivalry. De Niro is
a very worldly man, he mixes with the rich and powerful.
Duvall deals with the seamy underbelly, prostitution, many other police are on the take, but while in his past Duvall was a bagman for Durning..he hasn't exploited his position..he drives a jalopy.
When the brothers lives intersect over the murder, we see DeNiro fall from grace..he was destined to make Bishop..fast tracked by his patron the Cardinal....but eventually brought down to earth for having become embroiled in scandal.
Years later Duvall is driving out into the desert to visit his brother, guilt laden for having brought his brother down and causing him to be exiled to a dead end outpost..Duvall apologizes to his brother...we see an older Deniro who tells his brother that he is dying from cancer...
Deniro however tells Duvall that rather than having destroyed his life..he was instrumental in reminding him of what it really means to be a priest...and his previous life of luxury,prestige and worldly influence was tainted.
The music by Georges Delerue helps the movie transcend the sordidness and murkiness of the lives of most of the characters and points towards a sublime beautiful realm beyond the gritty, hopelessness and aimlessness, joyless existences portrayed.
