Reliable, simple, good looking SD40.
The Blue Box Athearn SD40-2 in 1984 Olympics paint is, to me, an iconic HO locomotive of the 80s.
Detail is definitely dated but still decent, and the drive mechanism is simple to fix. I love that they are American made, in Compton, not far from where the 1984 Summer Olympics took place.
These are still cheap for what they are, but there are fewer and fewer mint originals available as time goes on, so I recommend getting one while they're still somewhat easy to find.

Nice build quality and instructions
2 of 2 found this helpful Aside from addressing a long-known weak point of the Tamiya products that use this gearbox, the MIP differential is a nicely made product with very nice instructions and sensible packaging. It feels smooth and fits into the stock housing with no modifications required. It consists of several metal and plastic components, as well as two diameters of loose ball bearings that are separated in sealed plastic bags, and feels like it is good quality. I installed the MIP differential to support a 10.5T motor that I bought but haven't received yet, so I can't comment on how it tolerates stronger motors, but I think it will handle the 10.5 with no trouble, and assembling and installing it is an enjoyable process. Having a 2mm allen wrench ready when you assemble the MIP differential will make assembly and adjustment easy.

Great W126 model.
This model looks better in person than in the photos. It has good panel fit, nicely scaled trim, and very nice paint with no rash or other defects I've seen with most other 1:18 manufacturers. This car has non-U.S. bumpers and headlights, which look elegant and are accurate. For about $110, quality and detail are very nice.
