Essential reading for all who are interested in the story of the Bismarck
This is the story of the Bismarck from the highest ranking survivor -
Burkard Baron von Müllenheim-Rechberg. (Jack Sweetman is the translator for the English version). The writer was a gunnery officer on the Bismarck manning the aft gun director. It is fascinating to read the history of this battleship from the other side of the battle and get a feel for what life was like in the WWII German navy. and later in allied POW camps.
One aspect which comes out clearly is the sense of inferiority felt by many of the German navy surface fleet crews in the face of the British Royal Navy despite having formidable ships such as Bismarck. The German surface fleet was greatly outnumbered by the RN and the extent of its ambition was to disrupt British merchant shipping - a job much more efficiently carried out by U boats. The RN by contrast was designed to protect and maintain a worldwide empire.
The brief existence of the Bismarck and its apocalyptic end seems to have defined the author's life despite going on to a diplomatic career. He gathered testimony from many of the German survivors and added his authoritative voice to the many controversies arising from the episode.
So - essential reading for all who are interested in the short life of the Bismarck.

An old recording unsurpassed in some parts.
This an old recording and the sound though quite decent is showing its age particularly the orchestral sound. Playing speeds are slow compared to modern recordings with ploddy fast movements. The playing style is in the romantic style rather than the more brisk styles favoured by the authentic schools of today.
Having said all that you have one of the great violinists of the 20th century and his hugely talented son playing some of Bach's most attractive violin music. And having voiced all my reservations above some of this disk is very beautiful. In particular the slow movement of the D minor Double Concerto stands as one of the most moving I have heard.

Exceeded expectations
Very pleased with this little torch. It is better than I expected. It can run on a supplied rechargeable battery and also has a holder for non-rechargeables. The beam is pretty bright and can be focused with push pull action on the front of the casing. I do not know so much about how long the battery lasts or how rugged the switch and casing will turn out to be. But at the moment they look as though they will last well.,Excellent value for the money.
