Displays work perfectly using this device with mixed multi-monitor DP video card
I have 2 AMD FirePro 2460 4 DP (display-port) graphics cards in my PC supporting 8 monitors. Each card was supplied with 4 passive DP to DVI adapters. At first the cards worked fine since all monitors on each card were the same brand and model #. However, replacment of 1 monitor pair with a different brand and model # pair caused random monitor disconnects. Sometimes they worked and other times they didn't with 1 or more monitors shutting off randomly on start-up or wake-up.
The monitors were connected correctly per AMD instructions that said quad outputs must be paired with the same brand and model to DP 1 & 2 and DP 3 & 4 respectively. This was done.
However, this connection method was wrong. AMD technical support said that this card actually does not support this kind of pairing arrangemnent due to the card design not accepting clock speed differences between monitor pairs. Their suggestion was to replace 1 monitor pair on each 4 port card with an active, not passive, adapter or dongle. Active adapters contain a chip that controls the clock speed of the monitor into the card forcing the card to work. Since passive adapters do not have this chip to regulate clock speed, they cause mixed multi-monitor problems as I experienced.
Replacement of only two passive dongles on the card with this active dongle solved the problem becaude the quad card can support 1 monitor pair, not 2 with a passive adapter.
In conclusion, there has been no monitor disconnects since installation. Also, the end-end length of this one is about 1" longer than the original AMD dongle, from 6 to 7", making it easier to connect.
However, there was a slight misrepresentation. The DP lock indicated in the description was missing but still ok. The DP plug did not pull out of the ports, and the longer cable helped keep it in. For that reason I gave 4 not 5 stars due to the incorrect description.
In conclusion, these devices work perfectly with my 2 AMD Firepro 2460 multi-monitor 4 DP video cards. I would recommend using them to solve display problems due to mixed monitor types on the same video card with more than 2 DP (display port) outputs.
