Linebacker from the inside
I was flying on many of those missions and the quotes of several friends were there, word for word. Quite a good review of the events with only very minor mis-steps: IE: Unless Capt. R.J. Smith was broadcasting his whistle and call for time out on Guard channel, no NVA would have heard him. We could jam their comm band but not transmit voice over those frequencies.
Best story: Desire to court marshal Brent for saving Bob Hymel's life. Not the first time we crew members were threatened for doing the right thing.
Worst reality: Col. Bob Hymel was killed 9/11/01 while at work in the Pentagon.
Some stuff left out: Col. McCarthy was awarded Air Force Cross for sitting in on first mission. Was later revoked when crews objected en masse.
:Normal mission altitude for north missions was 41-42 thousand feet, reduced to allow chaff corridor to "simulate" protection. B-52 carried enough chaff to cover it's own path.
:High altitude evasion turns for missle defense was a standard procedure in training missions but dull tool planners would not allow it first few days.
:We still flew missions from Okinawa after we returned island to Japan's control. (Jan-Mar 1972 I was doing it.)
"We bombed within 20 miles of China in 1970, in a big wave mission in northern Laos.
:"Flyers" were what we called bombs that lost their tail assembly during the droop and fell elsewhere, like the one that sank a Polish cargo ship docked at Haiphong.
Suggestion: the 1989 edition needs a new addendum.
