The Legacy of a great read
A few months ago I had the extreme fortune to bid and win a copy of "Legacy of Letters" and found it to be one of the best written and most moving book on soldiering at the not-brass level I have read.
I will leave it to others to give a plot outline to this most engaging book and instead will concentrate on what I got from reading it.
Indeed, engaging is a monumental understatement as once into the book I sat and read it through from cover-to-cover in one sitting and never a moment of boredom. Mr. Fredericks skill as an author is evident on every page and with every passage and I can honestly state that in my 30 years as a newspaper editor in which I have reviewed hundreds of books, not one has ever proved to be a more interesting read nor gave me more rewarding insights into what a World War did to one "average" American in text rich with the peaks and valleys to triumphs and failure, joy and tears, love and love lost and all that war --- any war --- ends up costing those who fill the ranks of the nation's armed forces.
