Vivitar 285HV
Great Flash, great price. This is a very powerful and capable flash for the money. Build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but problems like weak foot can be easily fixed with an after market replacement. All in all it's easy to use, and not too heavy despite it's large size. It has a wide range of Auto settings, making it very useful today, even though the design goes back to the 1970's. One note, make sure that you pick up one with the HV designation (285HV) as these use a low sync voltage that is safe for most modern DSLRs.

Vivitar 283
The Vivitar 283, like it's big brother, the Vivitar 285 is quite a powerful and useful speedlight. It's high trigger voltage, and it's lack of versatile adjustments compared to the 285, make it pale in comparison. If you need lots of light for not a lot of money, then you might want a 283 or two in your arsenal. I bought one of these to be used off camera, but find that it's not adjustable enough to suit me. I didn't spend a ton of money on it, and I know I can find some good uses for it.
