This Thing ROCKS!
This is exactly what I've been looking for. After years of struggling with the ever-changing ProTools versions and an M-Box, I decided to try something simpler and self-contained. The DP-008EX is the magic combination that returned joy to the recording process. Now I'm inspired to record instead of groaning every time I have to drag out and connect the hardware, tussle with non-intuitive software and layers of obscure menus, and waste tons of time that I could spend creating instead of losing that great creative energy to 'equipment/software frustration'. The portability of this unit and ability to literally edit and process all the way to export in my lap wherever I go is worth every penny. The instruction booklet is fairly straightforward, but I learn better by watching operation via video or live demonstration, so found a great 15-minute video by K SandbergFL really helpful to get started: The real-time on-board effects (reverb, pan, eq, compression, de-esser, exciter (still trying to figure out what that actually does) make mix-down and and 2 settings for mastering a breeze; if you want more effects you can always import into your favorite DAW (I use Cool Edit Pro from decades ago and it does all I need). Audacity is a free open source DAW that is also great. I like that the 008 runs on batteries as well as an AC adapter (not included, but inexpensive on ebay), making it truly portable and ready to go on a moment's notice. I ordered rechargeable Eneloops for the 008, having had good luck with them for years in Tascam's DR-07. The 008 is small enough to throw in the messenger bag I use as a gig bag, but still large enough that the amber display is easy to see and the buttons/knobs are the right size for my hands. Tascam totally got this one right. Highly recommended! I can't speak to the durability of the 008EX since I've only had it a short time, but will update if there are any issues to report.
