Only Open Minds Should Inquire Within
Discovering this film was a happy accident. I was so impressed with Kyle Schmid's performances in the movie "A History of Violence" and in the television series "Blood Ties" that I was checking out his performances in other movies. His performance in Zerophilia is excellent. The wonderful surprise, however, is that the movie itself is hilarious and yet thought-provoking; one of those movies that sneaks up on you. This film addresses a wide range of societal perceptual conflicts: from men versus women, to masculine versus feminine, to heterosexual versus homsexual versus bisexual which all boils down to knowing who you are and what you need out of life and your relationships and not letting others' perceptions stop you from achieving it. The entire cast, a very talented group of young people that we will definitely be seeing more of in the future, are phenomenal in conveying the pain of self-discovery, the humor of life's little surprises (and, trust me, you have to have or acquire a great sense of humor if you discover that you change to the sex of the person you are turned on by), and the joy of discovering a partner that can share these experiences with you.
The writing is incredible, the pace fast but smooth, the acting right-on in every scene. One of the things I liked the best about this movie is that there is no "star" or "lead actor" -- the whole cast makes one organic whole. No one of them is dispensable. Considering that it takes four actors to play the two main characters (you'll see what I mean), that's quite an accomplishment!
I gave Zerophilia an "Excellent" rating for all the reasons stated above. If you are a product of the Disney Corporation, fast food restaurants, and religous convenience -- you might want to move on. If you want to be tuned in, turned on, and have a good laugh or two, this is the movie for you.
This movie is pretty difficult to get ahold of these days (for instance, Amazon bailed) but is well worth the effort of doing so.
