My acorn cookie cutter is very cute, although it is smaller than I expected it to be, but that's my fault -- I didn't read the dimensions closely enough. It is just as described. Careful packaging and quick shipping.

The Postcard by Beverly Lewis - Amish Christian Fiction
Great Lazy-Day Reading Material. Won't make anyone's best literature list...but I don't think that was the author's intention. Just plain entertainment. The author definitely did her homework and research of the Amish Community. The story takes place in Lancastor County, Pennsylvannia. The reader will definitely learn new insights of the Amish or "Plain People's" culture and traditions. The main story is of a woman and her struggles as a widowed Amish mother and her eagerness to learn her family history. She begins to develop a friendship with a magazine writer or "Englischer", who is visiting, her parents B & B. But, when she finds out more about her ancestors than her parents want her to know, they step in and basically kick the writer out. She questions the foundations of her religious beliefs and forms new beliefs that may get her "shunned", as parts of her family have in the past. I don't like to give away too much of the plot. But there are plenty of twists and turns in this to keep to keep the reader engaged. Don't forget to also get "The Crossroad", the follow-up to this book.

    For Mature Audiences Only
This book is a summer reading recommendation for my high school freshman child. Being a responsible parent, I decided to read it first. I had never heard of Isabel Allende or any of her writings. I am extremely glad I used my instinct with this one. This is most definitely not a book I will let my teenager read. Unlike my fellow reviewers, I found this novel full of unnecessary violence especially violence against women. In fact, if I didn't know the writer was a woman, I would say this was written by a socially inept male. From the beginning of the story, the lead male character has issues with keeping his pants zipped. He goes throughout the countryside and rapes every female age 13 and up. He fathers illegitimate children by the score and refuses to acknowledge or support any of them. He refers to women as "mares to be ridden" and prostitutes (he calls them whores) as necessary when he is living alone. As if sex is a requirement in order to continue living. He beats his wife, he cuts off his future son-in-law's fingers, and supports a whore house madam in a new business venture. Through the whole book, one main character out of approximately 10, is a virgin when she marries. Another woman, feeling homosexual tendencies, sneaks into her sister-in-law's bed. If this is typical behavior of Chilean people, count me out as a visitor. The magical and mystical part of this book doesn't disturb me near as much as the violent nature of the writing. Did I like anything about the book? I rather enjoyed the parts with the magical aspects. Do I think it's a real phenomenon? I'm not sure yet. But, I don't want to read violence of this magnitude. The social interaction and the political aspect with the conflict between communist, socialist and elitist thinking is exceptional. If only the story could have been told with more compassion toward the female gender. I watch the news. I already know these kinds of things are real. Do I have to read violence, too?

Randy Alcorn DOMINION Racial Prejudice Gangs Suspense
Ok, I'll admit it, this was a little hard to get in to. And, it was long. Alcorn's writing has definitely come a long way since 1996. BUT...This book is definitely worth reading. An inner city gang-land murder mystery with tons of character development. I had to finish this book to see whodunit. However, everyone should read this book for the insight into the gangs and racial issues of inner-city America. My eyes are a lot more open to my own prejudices. I would have sworn "I'm Not Prejudiced", before reading this book. I'm not sure I can say that, now. I can say, "I still have work to do". I know that I have thoughts, just like characters in this book, that are grounded in prejudices I didn't even know I had. Yes, there is mystery and suspense in the story line too. No one does research like Alcorn. No one writes like Alcorn. If you are new to Alcorn's fictional writing, I suggest you start with this book, then "Deadline". I promise you won't be sorry.
