Things to Remember--The Pamper Demos, Willie Nelson, New
    03 May 2021
    Pleasant surprise
I have recently discovered 1960s Willie...I know, I'm late to the game. I now have at least 10 releases or compilations, This would have gotten 5 stars except I reserve that for CDs I think the average buyer would like. If you are a fan of acoustic Willie I would recommend 'The Crazy Demos'. This collection does have some and they are very intimate. I don't believe the first 6 tracks are interesting versions, but almost every one after that is great. The highlight is a nightclub bluesy / jazzy version of 'Night Life'. Fantastic. There are very few cuts with the overdubbed vocals of the national releases, These are first versions with full studio band. It's great to compare these with the CD 'Early Years'. Also recommended.

    More Garage than Beatlesque
Though it cost me almost the same amount to buy this double CD as the single disk, having ALL their material is not necessary for the casual listener. I did a lot of research before buying because I rarely pay a lot for unknown 60s bands I'm trying out. So...If you grew up in the 60s you usually fall into two camps: Beatles / Beach Boys harmony - melody bands, or harder edged Stones / Yardbirds / Kinks rock - blues. The review that sold me on this tried to put this into the first. It's barely in the second. First of all I have never seen a double CD that puts the bonus and alternate material on the first disk. My opinion is this was a mistake because it is so boring I couldn't appreciate the main material. The boredom comes from a lack of musical writing ability for this era. Lyrically it is more interesting. But this is 2-chord chanting that evolved much later into the Punk Sound of bands like the Ramones. However, even fairly good musicians could not save the production. If you instead listen to only disk 2 you can see the band did evolve into a listenable band with better vocals and more chord changes. This is still too much material and is more suited to a Nuggets type collection of Garage Bands. It is NOT anything like the Beatle sound one reviewer on the Web indicated. If you like the second category: Yardbirds / Zombies / rougher Garage, then you may appreciate this, but save your money and check out the single disk. Disclaimer: I have not heard the single disk so this is a tentative recommendation. If you like vocal - harmony try out the very good disks: "The Twilights - The Way They Played" or "The Critters - Awake in a Dream." Both show a Beatles influence as it approached Psychedelic.

    More than 60s Sunshine
First, I have to say if you are looking for more "California Nights" style hits you may be slightly disappointed. That's a hard song to follow. Bur if you are looking for some great, obscure 1960s music this is for you. It is well produced, well played and well sung. The fact you get all the bonus material from this narrow window of time, 1967-8, is worth the price. The booklet is very informative. What is stunning...I have the 2-disk anthology that gives you about 7of these 'lost gems' and decided to compare the two. The anthology is very good. The Magic Colors CD is incredible. My car sound system did not do it justice. My home stereo did. The voices are as up front as the mono 45s, but there are instruments here I did not know were on the track. I will only mention two specifics: She does a great version of the Rascal's 'How Can I Be Sure." But her version of "Wedding Bell Blues", intended for release at the same time as the 5th Dimension's, is not as strong. A lot of the bonus material has a Motown / Laura Nyro feel including a tune that fooled me as to the writer. All in all a great time with this one.
