Les Histoires extra-ordinaire d'un jeune de Banlieue
After getting his incredible 2003 album, Jeu de Societe, I decided to check out the newest release from Disiz La Peste. This is another solid effort. If it wasn't for the lyrics, you might not ever know this is a French rapper. He has an excellent understanding of American hip-hop, and it comes through in the music. If anything, I might complain that this sounds a little too much like American hip-hop, and does not have any characteristically "French" or "Senegalese" sounds with the exception of the language. Though it does not have the range of sound, or depth of intellect that Jeu de Societe displays, Les histoires is none the less a enjoyable and worthwhile album. You have to respect any rapper with the guts to release an album cover featuring a photo of himself holding his infant son in a medium so often obsessed with violence and misogyny.
