Fuji S100FS - Excellent Buy
2 of 2 found this helpful I bought this camera as the next step from my Canon S3IS. I wanted a bridge camera which could take RAW picture files and had a decent zoom. I also wanted excellent image quality. I considered a number of new Fuji models but reading reviews and looking at photography forums, this model got the best feedback and was described as a classic in the Fuji range.
So, I sourced mine via eBay and it has lived up to comments made. The camera feels substantial, the controls are well laid out with convenient buttons for useful functions (ISO etc). The menu system is straightforward and easy to navigate. I am mainly using manual controls but I have tried the inbuilt 'scene modes'. These include settings for subjects like portraiture and sunsets and work pretty well. Certainly a good shortcut for a novice like me, for whom exact manual settings are not yet second nature.
The camera is quite heavy in use but not unduly so. Even in low light I have taken some good shots handheld, although the fully extended zoom is harder to keep still under these conditions. A tripod is worth a thought.
Where this camera really wins out is in its image quality, which is truly outstanding, especially using RAW. Set to take jpeg pictures it performs well too (and certainly better than some of the previous Fuji models in this series) but RAW definitely gives it an edge.Images are crisp, sharp and superbly detailed and the tonal range of the image is very natural (unless one opts to use one of the film simulation modes available which give effects like 'Velvia' film)
Not all the functions are available in RAW, including the widest picture size and the ability to set dynamic range. However these are more of an irritation than a problem.
The camera does suffer from a type of chromatic aberration, which causes 'purple fringing' on subjects like tree branches against the sky. This can only be fixed in post capture processing but we have found it easy to do in Photoshop.
These cameras seem to appear on eBay reasonably regularly, depending upon condition, bundled kit and the selling approach it is wise to expect to pay between £180 and £240 (Jan 2011). I paid £210.00 for mine from a seller upgrading to digital SLR, it was immaculate and with all the original items from the box.
