Bach Mass in B minor BWV 232 Bach Collegium Japan 2 Disc Set Import
    26 December 2020
    B minor mass in 5.1
Not many options for a good Bm in surround sound. This is a good, non-controversial choice. I have a copy of the Netherlands Bach Society in stereo only. I give them the edge on their approach to Bach in the Passions and several oratorios I own. I am specifically referring to the way they utilize the extra channels in 5.1. An sacd of their Bm goes for a premium price as it is out of print. So the Suzuki is first choice for now. Great performance and great recording with the 5.1 providing a vivid acoustic. My understanding is this is HIP-informed, but not rigid HIP. Perfect by my standards.

Essential big band mozart in 5.1
This is a dts-cd with full 5.1 surround on capable systems. As of 2022 there is no similar offering. Karajan recorded the last six in the early 70s in quad for emi. Effectively unpmixed to 5.1 here. These final mozart 6 deserve a full release on bluray, but until then, enjoy this. Demonstration quality 5.1. You may need to turn down the bass. This is crazy stuff that'll have the HIPsters clutching their diapers.
Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans: Expanded Edition [New CD] With Blu-Ray Audi
    08 June 2019
Worthwhile upgrade to Tales Of Topographic
This review refers specifically to Steven Wilson's 5.1 bluray edition of this album (which includes 1 bluray disc and 3 audio CD's). I own all the Wilson Yes remixes on bluray except Relayer, for which I only have the Wilson 2 channel audio CD. Tales arguably gets the biggest boost from the 5.1 treatment. If you always thought this was a meandering mess of an album, then Wilson may not change your mind. But, if you thought this was a 3 star effort, the 5.1 remix will probably push it into the 4-5 star range for you (like it did for me). I also enthusiastically recommend Wilson's Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge remixes without hesitation. Note that while some engineers see a new 5.1 mix as an opportunity to "reinvent" the album, Wilson's approach is to use the original mix as a guide, so you won't be hearing new clarinet or cowbell solos that someone found in the original session tapes but were never included in the original mix. The extras include the usual rough mixes, studio run-throughs, single edits, etc., none of which are the main reason to buy these albums on bluray. In a nutshell, these albums have never sounded better (and I own each in several original and remastered editions) and are the type of music that perfectly lends itself to the 5.1 treatment. For once something lives up to the hype!
