The lens is great for macro photography and focuses down to a 1:1 with great ease. The only issue i have with the lens is that when focusing the barrel, the motor isn't smooth, rather it makes a semi-awkward noise. Of course this is only preference, but it is something I have noticed. Another thing I didn't like is that to place the lens in manual, not only do you have to cock the barrel back, you also have to switch your camera to manual as well. Once again its more of a convenience issue, not a lens issue. The photos are sharp and great so no real complaints here!

A very solid lens.
This lens is a great lens. I chose this over the Tamron 90mm Macro because I felt the price was better and they are both relatively the same in specifications. The lens is smooth, not too heavy, has great focal distance to allow you to get up on something small (say a bug) without scaring it off. Unlike the Nikon 60mm Micro which does not give you enough field of work.

As for use of portraits, I received some great results:

The only complaint I have is that when focusing, the actual "feel" of the lens isn't perfectly smooth. But that is just me picking at something to dislike about it.
