Great Comedy/Drama
1 of 1 found this helpful Fairly obscure movie but really worth watching particularly for Freddie Bartholomew. An interesting relationship between he and his reluctant kidnapper, who will eventually become his hero. Great family movie with some mild gun fighting violence.

Great movie, not so great reissue.
First, let me say I totally love this movie. It's great seeing familiar faces from 1960s and 70s television in totally different roles than you're accustomed to seeing them in, and the premise of an entire town going "cold turkey" to quit smoking to win a huge amount of money (their failing local economy could certainly use it!) is a hoot.
So while it's great to have on DVD, it's not particularly a quality release. You won't find much online about the original aspect ratio, but I've seen enough earlier versions, the VHS release, for example, to lead me to believe the original aspect ratio is most likely 4:3, and compared to the DVD release, it becomes apparent this original aspect has been cropped on top and bottom to give the impression of a wider screen release on this particular DVD issue. I'm certain this DVD issue IS NOT the complete frame as originally filmed. But honestly, the movie is still great despite this, and the clarity of the print is actually pretty nice.
Where this particular release suffers is the sound quality. Some tone-deaf, stone eared person was responsible for over processing the noise reduction when restoring the soundtrack. The end result is a soundtrack that has a very apparent flanged sound during many of the musical interludes. This is really unfortunate, as there are some really great musical numbers in this movie.
Despite these flaws with this release (cropped picture and poor sound quality), it's still a GREAT movie that you'll watch over and over to relive the late 60s/ early 70s and watch an entire town of smokers go crazy while trying to kick the habit! There are quite a few memorable characters in this movie that really make it work: "Odie" (Judith Lowry) and "Edgar Stopworth" (Tom Poston) being my two favorites!
A five star movie flawed slightly by poor oversight during it's reissue. Not a perfect edition but still worth buying.
